Offensive Weapons Bill Section 15

As you may or may not know, there is a draft bill currently being considered by Parliament which will have a major impact on our ability to buy tools on-line or by post. The Government's intention is to restrict the ability of under-18s to buy what it defines as offensive weapons, but this unfortunately includes all sharp tools that may be legitimately required by people such as wood carvers.

Under the current draft bill, you would no longer be able to receive such tools at your home address and would have to prove your age before receiving them.

I wrote on behalf of the BWA in August to the Home Secretary and the parliamentary committee currently reviewing the bill, expressing our concerns regarding the restrictions this would place on legitimate purchasers of tools and equipment and suggested ways in which the proposed situation might be improved. I received a reply from an official from the Home Office in early October.

My original letter and the reply are reproduced below.

Introduction to the British

Woodcarvers Association

Welcome to the official site of the British Woodcarvers Association, otherwise known as the BWA.
The association exists to advance and promote the art and craft of wood carving and sculpture in all its forms, to encourage the exchange of ideas between members, promote best practice and to enable wood carvers and sculptors to promote their work to a wider audience.
On this website you will find details of everything to do with woodcarving; from joining the BWA, to buying the necessary tools and timber, from commissioning a carver, to finding tuition. There is also news of BWA meetings and events.
